Rapid antigen testing for business

The Ministry of Health has released new guidance on the use of rapid antigen testing (RAT) by businesses.

Following completion of the MBIE Business Charter Pilot, the Ministry of Health is supporting the rollout of RAT to the wider business community.

Businesses wishing to use RATs in their workplaces can now source approved kits directly from authorised suppliers.

The new guidance includes:

  • Rapid Antigen Testing: Guide for Businesses
  • RA testing requirements and processes
  • Protocols for general staff management following a positive RAT result.

It also includes information on applying to import and supply the tests.

RATs are less sensitive at detecting cases, especially in asymptomatic people or people who are early in their infectious period. A positive result in any RAT requires a confirmation test by RT-PCR swab undertaken by a healthcare professional. However, they give a result quickly (often in less than 15 minutes), helping with rapid risk assessment and reducing how long a positive individual is active in the community.
